"BHARAT RATNA" Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar!

Recently India witnessed a lot of hue and cry over offering of "BHARAT RATNA" to the legendary cricketer, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar! A large section of people and politicians support the issue and urge the Government at the Central to give this honour to him. The Government is more inclined to do this and it is on the job of amending the clause which denies BR to sportsperson. As a common man I have nothing to say in this, neither to support nor to oppose the move. In fact, I may sideline with majority opinion as a lover of cricket and its one of The Tallest Personality of all times. I am a little in the ocean of hype creators like the Delhi  Municipal Corporation, which gone to the extent of renaming the famous Chandni Chowk after Sachin. There are some people like Justice Markhandey Khaju, condemning the move. But alas! he is alone in this matter. He would have forgotten Sachin is God to most of the cricket fans of India.

What I have narrated above is reality. But in true sense, we as a large society is not worth of thinking over an issue reasonably. We go according to the wave that sweeps the nation in a particular period of time. Let me analyse the issue here before seeing the reality.

1. What is "Bharat Ratna"

Bharat Ratna, was created by our forefathers of Constitution to honour those people who placed the Pride of India atop the world. They choose a few fields to offer this honour. Maiden honour went to Gems in Rajaji and Radhakrishnan. They never thought of giving it to Gandhiji as he was not living at the time of institution of this title. Only a few years later the successive Governments decided to offer the title to the deceased. Finally the latter Governments offered the title to those living/dead, who are politically supportive to them or who, they think, are politically beneficial to them. Thus the title has been politicized and there is nothing like pride remains in it. A title which has not been offered on people like Gandhiji, Bhagat Singh, Vanchinathan, Muthulakshmi Reddy even years of their death or offered to people like Ambedkar, Netaji, Sardar Patel, years after their death, is not worth to comment. Still I choose to write it as people think it is an honour.

2. Why Sachin should be Honoured with Bharat Ratna?

Sachin is a legendary cricketer, born once in a Yuga, and truely acknowledged in countries like India, where money, muscle and crowd matters. He placed the country on the world map in recognition along with white skinned countries, which still boast Bradman & Co. He crossed many of the landmarks which other could not dream of in near future. He not only carries his bat to the crease but millions of hearts. People turn off their TV sets once Sachin is out. They decide the match is over for India if Sachin is not there. In his absence, only miracles save matches for India. Such was the Image and Personality of Sachin. Sure he is eligible for Bharat Ratna and more than that a separate Award can be instituted in his Name by the Government to present to those who excel in the field.

3. Why he should not be given the honour?

Despite the qualifications and abilities of Sachin as narrated above, it is next to a cruel joke if the Government decides to award Bharat Ratna to Sachin. How? It is just because of the Institute he represent at the International arena, the Board of Control for Cricket in India-BCCI. This one Board controls entire cricket sport in our Country and the Government or any one of its Ministry has no control over it. Other than Cricket the Ministry of Sport has a say and is monitored by many of its wings like Sports Authority of India or Olympic Association, etc. But there is no relation with Cricket. That is fun. The Sports Ministry begged recently with BCCI to send a Cricket team to the Commonwealth Games, which was turned down by BCCI. A easy Gold medal slipped from our hands due to this attitude.

In one of the case before the Hon'ble High Court of Madras, the BCCI pleaded that the Ministry of Sports or the Government cannot control them. They are the registered Association, they have separate fund, auditors, etc., which is not responsible to the Government or the Parliament. They argued that the cricketers represent the BCCI and not the Government or the Country. (This attitude of the BCCI encouraged some cricketers to create Indian Cricket League which was a failure as it lack star cricketers. Its photostat copy the Indian Premier League draws crowd and is in vanning period) So every cricketer of this country plays for an Association called BCCI and he has no relation with the Country and has no right to use its Symbols or Flags. In the Circumstances, how can we say that Sachin played for the Nation and he represented the Country, a fact denied by his own Association, BCCI. If a person who plays for an association is to be recommended for highest civilian award of this Country, then there should be no restriction for other associations. Every street cricketer who plays for one or the other association or club can be honoured with the award. If Sachin were to be honoured with Bharat Ratna, when he is still under BCCI, it will be a mere dishonour to Gems of this country who were already garlanded with Bharat Ratna.

4. What we people like to do?

We are talented people and at the same time not interested in recognising such talents. We always travel along with the tide. So, we want Sachin to be honoured with Bharat Ratna whatever be his disqualifications. We want cricket at any cost. We will forget everything for cricket. We will keep quiet if some pakistanis rage war against India, but at the same time we will shout loudly if somebody scored hundred against Pakistan. Such was our mental stability! We are the laughing stock for everybody. A society once a resource for abundant Knowledge and Light, is today lying at the bottom of the list of knowledgeable personalities. So, for the sake of insanity it is advisable that Sachin should be awarded with Bharat Ratna!
