LESS-WASTE MORE-UTILITY

Every Indian household is prone to savings. India's strength lies in saving. They spend less and earn more. That's why India escaped the economic melt witnessed by the rest of the world recently. Not only we save money, we use a material up to its life and beyond. Even if it lost a life, we ignite it after some corrections. A concept called 'use-and-throw' is not known to India. This kind of attitude gives employment to lower and secondary level labourers. A wrist-watch or a piece of garment is used again after doing required service or repairs. But, when we see the Government offices, such attitude is rare to witness. Stationaries, furnitures and other materials are wasted and not subjected to maximum utilisation.

Recently when walking along the platform in a Railway Station in Chennai, I witnessed the rails were subjected to such utilisation. The attitude of the Railway employees is commendable. The rails are corroded on one side as the wheels are touching the rails on only one side, leaving the other side free from friction. A rail which normally functions for two to three year can be utilised for one more year if the other side is subjected to such friction. That is when the rails require change, left rail can be placed on the right and the right on left. This will pave way for friction on the hitherto frictionless surface. This will save crores of rupees for the Railways and the Nation.

Not only Railways every Government office should strictly impose the measures of thrift and encourage maximum utilisation of Government materials. A white paper is always printed on only one side. The other side can also be used if the notings, letters, and circulations are intra-departmental. The printer-ribbons lose their shine on the lower part. A new technic can be invented for utilisation of the upper part. Air-conditioners and fans can be switched-off during winter and rainy days.

Employees can be allowed to function during flexy-timings and the salary can be calculated according to the hours they have worked, instead of months/days. There need not be any holiday or leave immensely. This will increase the quality and quantity of work and at the same time minimise wastage of man-power. Complaints like 'not-in-seat', 'on-leave', etc., can be redressed.
